…but not in the way that the fox news man, dr. ablow, seems to think it is. here’s the article: http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/20110413/ts_yblog_thelookout/hot-pink-toenailed-boy-in-j-crew-ad-sparks-controversy, and here’s the summary: the president and creative director of j. crew included a photo in their new catalog of her and her adorable five-year-old boy who’s toenails happen to be painted pink, which, according to a quote underneath the picture, also happens to be his favorite color. this has made many people angry, including the aforementioned fox news man, causing people to label it as liberal, transgendered propaganda.
i personally love my painted toenails, but apparently that’s only ok because i’m a girl. one summer when i was much younger, my mom was painting my toes pink, and my brother and cousin felt left out, so she painted their toes, too. we were all very pleased until my uncle caught sight of his son’s toes and kind of flipped out. needless to say the nail polish remover was found very quickly.
the bottom line is this: the kid looks so incredibly happy, who cares what color his toenails are? and even if he does grow up to be the most flaming of homosexuals or tranniest of transgendered people, who cares as long as s/he’s happy? i don’t, and neither should dr. albow. and neither should you.
i realize that it is indeed mid-April now and the moment has passed, yet i couldn’t resist the urge to post this rant. please enjoy (and note that it was written on april 1st):
it’s snowing on april 1st. while generally upsetting, people around here should be aware that they live in new england and the weather does whatever it wants to whenever it wants to. i honestly wouldn’t be too surprised to get this sort of snowy/rainy weather in july. nonetheless, i have seen many facebook statuses asking mother nature if this is some sort of joke, specifically one meant for april fools’ day. really people, it was only funny the first time, and not even “haha” funny, just worthy of a little chuckle and then it would have flown right out of my mind except it has been repeated over and over and over again. the joke’s gotten old, especially because mother nature is not actually a person, and even if she were, what mother in her right mind would make it snow at this time of year?
i made a snide comment in my own facebook status relating this supposed “noreaster” to global warming, saying that mother nature called and said that this weather isn’t a joke, it’s payback for causing global warming. now, while i know there is much more to climate change than the planet simply getting warmer, many others don’t. in fact, many people use these sorts of events, snowstorms and the like, to try and disprove the fact that global warming is occurring. i was in west virginia recently and a local newspaper had the caption “global warming? not in such-and-such county” underneath a picture of a backyard covered in snow. it almost gave me an aneurysm; i swear i felt actual pain.
global warming is indeed a problem, and it is a result of humans screwing with the natural way of the environment. yes, the earth does go through periodic spells of warming and cooling, but we’re supposed to be on a cooling spell right now and the opposite is happening, and it has crazy repercussions: for example, by warming the planet we throw off ocean and wind currents that drastically impact the environment and the entire globe’s weather.
if people carry on their depletion of earth’s resources and continue releasing toxins into the air, earth won’t be able to support human life any more, and that’s the ultimate “forget you” from mother nature. she deserves to be angry, and we brought it on ourselves.
respect mother nature. she is a powerful force to be reckoned with.
